Govt out to manipulate upazila polls: RizviNew Age Online
BNP on Wednesday alleged that the government is hatching various plots to manipulate upazila election results into its favour as, what the party said, they did in the January 5 parliamentary polls, UNB reports.
Addressing a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office around 11:30am, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also claimed that the ruling party men were capturing polling stations, forcing out the agents of BNP-backed candidates and casting fake votes in different upazilas across the country.
“The polling agents of BNP-backed contenders are being driven out from various centres since morning. The ruling party cadres and law enforcers are attacking BNP leaders and activists at different places,” he told journalists.
Rizvi also accused the administration of assisting Awami League-supported candidates in election irregularities.
“The government is staging a farce in the name of elections with the help of its puppet administration and state power. So, the Prime Minister is holding the portfolio of the Home Ministry,” the BNP leader observed.
Condemning the Election Commission’s ‘inactive’ role, Rizvi said the commission remains silent even after their party appraised it in a letter about their apprehension of such incidents.
The residents of 97 upazilas of 40 districts started casting their votes at 8am on Wednesday to choose their long list of representatives to upazila parishads in the first phase of the staggered local body elections.
A total of 1,259 candidates are contesting the election against 291 posts in the 97 upazilas. Of them, 429 are chairman candidates and 505 vice chairman contenders apart from 325 vice chairman candidates contesting the election for the post set aside for women.
