Outlawed leader killed in Madaripur ‘gun battle’New Age Online
A leader of the Purba Banglar Sarbahara Party (PBSP) was killed in a ‘gun battle’ with police at Baghmara village under Shibchar upazila of Madaripur district early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Kiron Bepari, 29, son of late Afu Bepari, a resident of Uttar Daulatdia village under Goalanda upazila of Rajbari district.
Kiron, on behalf of the outlawed party, had allegedly demanded Tk 1.5 lakh in ransom over a mobile phone from a Bangladeshi expatriate living in Canada and posted him a piece of shroud on February 13 to his Madaripur address, said AKM Masud Khan, officer-in-charge of Shibchar police station.
After tracking down the mobile phone call list, a team of police led by assistant sub-inspector Nuton Datta launched a drive in Pachchar area on Tuesday and detained Kiron along with his two associates - Jamal Sheikh and Shiblu Sheikh. The both the associates were residing there in guise of construction workers.
Later on Wednesday, police started another drive taking Kiron with them at Baghmara village to recover illegal arms at about 1:15am.
Sensing the presence of police the leader’s cohorts fired on police triggering a gunfight that left Kiron critically injured, the OC said.
Kiron was taken to Shipchar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead, he added.
Police recovered one foreign pistol and two rounds of bullets from the spot.
Kiron was an accused of a number of cases including murder, extortion and other criminal offences.
