Bangladesh Krishak Samiti, a farmers’ rights body, on Monday held demonstrations near the Bangladesh Secretariat demanding compensation for the potato farmers.
The farmers dumped potatoes on the road to express their grievances during a rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club.
Leaders of the organisation urged the government to take immediate steps to save the potato farmers. They also demanded the setting up of more cold storages and agriculture-based industries.
The organisation also held demonstrations in the district towns to press its demands.
Chaired by president of the organisation Morshed Ali, the rally was addressed, among others, by its vice-president Nurur Rahman Selim, general secretary Sajjad Zahir Chandan, central leaders Zahid Hossain Khan, Roman Haider and Manabendra Dev.
The farmers had a bumper production of potato but they are not getting satisfactory price and are facing huge losses, the leaders said.
