WAR CRIMES TRIAL

Tribunal closes war crimes case against Yusuf

New Age Online

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Wednesday formally closed the proceedings of the war crimes case against late Jamaat-e-Islami leader AKM Yusuf.
On February 9, AKM Yusuf, who was detained in war crimes cases, died in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital in Dhaka.
The ICT-2 presiding judge, Justice Obaidul Hasan passed the order in presence of the two others tribunal members, Justice Md Mujibur Rahman Mia and judge Md Shahinur Islam.
The tribunal asked the jail authority to submit the post-mortem report to it as soon as possible.
The tribunal in its order mentioned the procedural history of the case.
The case of 87-year-old Yusuf was waiting for closing arguments. The cross-examination of all the 27 prosecution witnesses and the single defence witness was completed on February 5 when Yusuf was last produced in ICT-2.
Yusuf, reported to have founded the Razakar force during the independence war, had faced trial on 13 counts of crimes against humanity involving genocide, killing, abduction, arson attack, torture in confinement and forcible conversion of Hindus to Islam in the Khulna region.
Yusuf was arrested at his house at Dhanmondi in Dhaka on May 12, 2013. He was indicted on June 1 that year.
Yusuf was from Rajair at Sarankhola in Bagerhat.
