Shadhona to premiere Premamritam

Cultural Correspondent

Shadhona artistes perform in Premamritam, which will be premiered on Sunday at the Music and Dance Centre of Bangladesh Shilpakal Academy.Shadhona artistes perform in Premamritam, which will be premiered on Sunday at the Music and Dance Centre of Bangladesh Shilpakal Academy.

Shadhona will stage the premier show of its experimental production Premamritam on February 16 at the Music and Dance Centre of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Premamritam, signifying divine love, depicts Lord Krishna’s antics in each of the ‘awshto prohor’ or ‘eight divine divisions of each day’ - culminating in the ‘jugal nritya’ of Krishna and his foremost devotee Radha.
In the production the troupe members will dance with Bangla Vaishnava Padabali songs to be presented by the traditional Manipuri musicians from Kamolganj in Moulvibazar.
These songs are usually performed during the rituals and festivals of the Manipuri community.
‘As part of Shadhona’s three-year project titled “Dhrumel”, we have undertaken research and documentation of the vibrant treasure-trove of Bangla Vaishnava Padabali songs sung during the rituals and festivals.  A vital part of our research and documentation programme is the showcasing of the music and musicians of Kamolganj,’ said Lubna Marium, general secretary of Shadhona.
‘We hope to showcase both the exquisite songs and the local Manipuri singers and musicians within the dance-production, while also developing a Bangladeshi “margam”, meaning way - signifying repertoire, for the manipuri classic dance,’ she added.
The production is a three-year dance-training programme, initiated by Shadhona and Manipuri Theatre, to teach Manipuri dance to the Manipuri community in Srimangol in Moulvibazar that commenced in June 2013.
