150 shanties gut in Mirpur slumNew Age Online
A fire that broke out in a slum in the city’s Mirpur-2 area on Tuesday afternoon burnt over 150 shanties, and 15 shops, witnesses and fire service officials said.
The fire was, however, contained after one and half hours of efforts by the fire fighters from across 12 nearby stations.
Witnesses said at least five slum dwellers were injured when they tried to bring their valuables. Fire service officials and police, however, were not aware of the injured persons.
According to the fire service and civil defense control room, the fire broke out near Janata Housing around 12:30pm and soon engulfed dozens of shanty houses there.
The fire was doused at about 2:00 pm, officials said.
Reason behind the fire could not be confirmed immediately, but slum dwellers alleged that some local influential people with the blessing of some land developers might have set the blaze.
Sweepers and lower strata employees of the Dhaka City Corporation were living there for almost three decades. The dwellers said they experienced such devastations at least four times.
