Tech-based stalls add to book fair charmSardar Mahabbat Ali
Apart from being a knowledge hub for booklovers, the Amar Ekushey Book Fair this year also caters for the visitors who are technologically-minded.
Innovative stalls like Data Soft Boi Poka, online radio channels, access to information process, e-information centre added a new dimension to the fair ground inside the Bangla Academy premises.
Among these, smart phone app Boi Poka, for both android and iOS platform, for the first came to the fair.
‘We’re providing the bookworms in the digital era with the latest online version of their favourite books,’ mobioapp Business Development Officer Asruf-Ul-Jubair told New Age.
Terming the initiative as the ‘pioneering’ with proper procedures, he said, ‘We maintain legitimacy as the publishers supply their titles to have our own PDF version.’
The technology so far attracted many visitors every day, said Jubair, adding, ‘We intend to take our innovations to the mass level to keep pace with the advanced world.’
Besides, stalls of different private-run television stations at the fair, some five online media like boinews24.com, shadhin 92.4 fm, Ananda Alo and Protidiner Boimela, focused on the book fair, were also found operating their regular activities to provide the visitors with the latest update on new titles, prominent, popular and new
‘As soon as time for live telecast on update comes at 5:20pm every day, our team of 15-20 members become very busy,’ said Protidiner Boimela assistant programmer Lutfor Rahman Rasel.
Also technological support-based stalls — Micros Digital and Daffodil Multimedia inside the academy — got good response from the visitors.
A good number of enthusiasts were using the access to information centre and e-information centre of the book fair.
Regarding the proposed initiative to live-telecast the seminar and cultural programmes on the academy website, the fair organising committee member secretary Shahida Khatun told New Age that the initiative was still under process.
Meanwhile, a total of 78 new titles hit the fair. Both collections of poetry and novel, with 16 titles each, led the tally, followed by 14 books of stories and five collections of essays.
Also 16 new books were unveiled at Nazrul Mancha on the day. Cultural personality Kamal Lohani and Gana Oikya convener Pankaj Bhattacharya launched a title ‘Kara Smrity’ of the late leftist leader Abdus Shahid in the afternoon.
Talking to reporters, Kamal Lohani said, ‘This is an excellent piece of write-up on jail experience.’
The academy officials, writers and visitors also paid their last tribute to the late poet Fazal Shahbuddin at Nazrul Mancha in the evening.
Among others, the academy secretary Md Altaf Hossain, poets Syed Shamsul Haque, Asad Chowdhury, author Ali Imam and Lutfur Rahman Riton attended the programme.
The academy held a discussion on Ustad Mamtaz Ali Khan. Golam Kuddus read out the keynote paper and poet Asad Chowdhury chaired the session. A cultural programme followed the seminar.
Today, a discussion on Ajit Kumer Guha will be held at the main stage of the fair. Hayat Mamud will read out the keynote paper at the function, to be presided over by Kamal Lohani.
The fair is open from 3:00pm to 8:30pm on working day. On public holidays, it remains open from 11:00am till 8:30pm with a break from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.
