‘Roads still in chaotic condition’Staff Correspondent
A minister, an editor, a litterateur and experts on Friday observed that the highways and roads were still in a chaotic condition.
They made the observation at the launch of online news portal ‘nirapadnews.com’ organised by Nirapad Sarak Chai, a platform campaigning for road safety, at the Sonargaon Hotel.
The information minister, Hasanul Haq Inu, at the programme, said that according to Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, 86 vehicles in every 10,000 fell in accidents in Bangladesh while the rate was only three in developed countries.
He said that accidents occurred not only for drivers’ faults but also for faulty design of roads, owners’ corruption and lack of awareness.
Ministers, lawmakers and high officials also violate traffic rules, he said.
According to Nirapad Sarak Chai, 2,750 accidents took place in 2013 in which 5,162 people were killed and 7,214 injured.
Bishwa Sahitya Kendra chairman Abdullah Abu Sayeed, also an adviser of the organisation, said that it was the government’s responsibility to make roads and highways safe.
He urged the government to make it mandatory for heavy vehicle drivers to be graduates and light vehicles’ drivers to have passed the Secondary School Certificate exams.
Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman, also an adviser of the organisation, said that the authorities were not fulfilling their responsibilities to make roads safe.
The organisation’s chairman Ilias Kanchan said that they would try to make people aware of accidents through the online news portal.
The organisation has been continuing its campaign with slogan – we demand safe road – since December 1, 1993.
The portal will provide news on daily events, news and statistics about traffic accidents, he said.
