Melody of patriotic sons filled Shahabagh and its adjacent areas while poetry recitation enthralled activists of Ganajagaran Mancha who celebrated the first founding anniversary of the programme on Thursday.
Activists of the youth-led platform campaigning for the capital punishment of all war criminals organised cultural programmes, including staging drama, and recalling experiences of the movement by media men on the second day of their three-day programme.
The day’s programme began with national anthem at 3:30pm.
Some 15 songs on the sacrifices of martyrs of country’s every democratic movements since 1952 were rendered while a number of poems were recited on the day.
The spokesman of the platform, Irman H Sarker, inaugurated a drawing competition at Shahbagh crossing in the evening, followed by staging of a drama by the cultural fronts of the platform.
Some 10 media men also shared their experiences of the movement.
Today, the platform will hold a rally at Shahbagh at 3:00pm while a special cultural programme will be held at 7:00pm at the same venue.
A group of young people including online activists, bloggers and student leaders took to streets in the city’s Shahbagh intersection on February 5, 2013, hours after the International Crimes Tribunal 2 sentenced Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Mollah to imprisonment for life term on charge of crimes against humanity and genocide during war of independence.
Quader Mollah was eventually executed, but the protests continued pressing for capital punishment for all war criminals and ban on religion-based politics.
