Hatirjheel Lake roads have gone wild
Non enforcement of traffic rules causing frequent accidentsShahin Akhter
In the absence of traffic management the Hatirjheel Lake roads have gone wild causing frequent accidents, said experts and officials.
They advised the authorities to immediately bring the entire area under traffic management to cut down conflicts between rapidly growing traffic movement on the lake roads and the recreational facilities.
The lake roads were opened to traffic on January 2, 2013.
Unmanned by traffic police, the lake roads connecting Tejgaon, Gulshan, Modhubagh, Moghbazar, Badda and Ulan, became hazardous for users.
The walkways were also opened to pedestrians on the same day.
The lake roads witnessed frequent accidents, especially at Modhubagh due to violation of speed limits, vehicles plying on the wrong side of the one way roads and pedestrians crossing roads at sweet will.
On January 31, four young riders on two motorbikes collided head on leaving a rider dead on the spot and three others injured near the Modhubagh Foot Bridge.
At least five motorcyclists and co-riders died in the area in one year, said project officials.
BUET civil engineering professor and the project’s consultant Shamsul Hoque said that the primary objective of the project was to create a retention pond to ease the area’s water-logging and to recharge groundwater.
Later, the lake roads and the peripheral walkways were planned to protect the lake from grabbers, he said.
Rapidly growing traffic on the lake roads is causing problems to surrounding urban space deserve greater attention from the city’s police, he said.
He said that the project office has been asked to check ‘joy-rides’ by speeding motorcyclists.
Work for Better Bangladesh, Trust transport expert Maruf Rahman told New Age Wednesday that the growing traffic problems on the lake roads already created an anarchic situation.
He blamed absence of traffic management for the lake roads gone wild.
He called for deploying traffic police to check speed and unauthorized parking.
He also advised the authorities to pay greater attention to make the walkways safe for the pedestrians.
He said that the lake roads need more directional markers or road signs to end drivers’ confusion.
Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha, Local Government Engineering Department, Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority and a unit of the army engineering corps built the lake roads.
Project officer Major Kazi Shakil Hossain told New Age on Wednesday that he had discussed the traffic management issue with Dhaka Metropolitan Police officials on Sunday.
The DMP’s traffic division made special drives in the Hatirjheel Lake area since Tuesday, he said.
DMP joint commissioner for traffic YM Belalur Rahman said that police had been assigned to patrol the lake roads.
‘If needed we will deploy traffic police,’ he added.
DMP deputy commissioner for traffic Iqbal Hossain told New Age that no signalling system was needed on the one-way lake roads.
Visitors are horrified at the lack of vision in managing traffic and safety on the lake roads.
