Ganajagaran Mancha marks founding annivDU Correspondent
Ganajagaran Mancha, campaigning for capital punishment for all war criminals and ban on religion-based politics, on Wednesday began its founding anniversary programmes with the call for continuing with protests against the anti-liberation forces.
The three-day programmes were inaugurated with placing wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar and the National Memorial in the morning.
Later, the platform spokesman, Imran H Sarker, conducted an oath taking programme in the afternoon at the Shahbagh crossing.
The Mancha activists swore for continuing movement until collaborators of liberation war in 1971 were executed and politics of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir was banned.
They also vowed to boycott the financial, socio-cultural organisations of Jamaat men, resist sectarian violence and struggle for a non-communal Bangladesh.
Journalist Kamal Lohani, Dhaka University professor and former Jahangirnagar University vice-chancellor Md Anwar Hossain, human rights activist Khushi Kabir, economist MM Akash, Sammilita Sangskritik Jote president Nasir Uddin Yousuf Bachchu and playwright Ramendu Majumdar, among others, attended the function.
The organisers also held a photography and poetry programme on the roadside from Shahbagh crossing to Dhaka University’s Teacher-Student Centre.
Later, they brought out a procession from Shahbagh. It marched towards Karwan Bazar before ending at Shahbagh in the evening.
A cultural programme followed at night.
Today, a drawing competition will be held while cultural organisations will display their performances and media men will recall their experiences of the movement. Poems on liberation war would be recited at Shahbagh.
A rally will also be held at Shahbagh at 3:00pm tomorrow [Friday] while a special cultural programme will be held at 7:00pm at the same venue.
Online activists, bloggers and student leaders took to streets in the city’s Shahbagh intersection on February 5, 2013, hours after the International Crimes Tribunal 2 sentenced Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Mollah to imprisonment for life term on charge of crimes against humanity and genocide during war of independence.
Later, Quader Mollah eventually was executed, but the protests continued pressing for capital punishment for all war criminals and ban on religion-based politics.
