JP in disarray over picking UZ poll candidates

Ershad-Raushan row blamed for situation

Siddiqur Rahman Khan

Jatiya Party field level leaders and activists are in total disarray over selecting candidates for the upazila parishad elections.
Field leaders and activists blamed the conflicts between the party chief HM Ershad and leader of the opposition Raushan Ershad for the situation.
They said that Raushan had little control over field leaders and activists while the party grassroots were suspicious of Ershad because of his famous indecisiveness particularly after his flip-flops on the January 5 parliamentary polls before the party finally contested it.
JP presidium members Karim Uddin Bharsha and Delwar Hossain told New Age that they had received no directives from central leaders leaving the grassroots in utter confusion. He said the centre seemed to have no control over candidates.
`Aspirants in greater Rangpur are disappointed over the row between the two top leaders of our party and central leaders have no control over candidates in upazila polls. There are nearly 50 upazilas in greater Rangpur,’ said Karim Uddin who had withdrawn candidature for the January 5 parliamentary polls at Ershad’s directive.
Delwar Hossain said that Raushan was taking some decisions on her own which were also causing problems.
JP presidium member Suni Shuva Roy, also the political secretary to Ershad, said that the party chairman was scheduled to hold a meeting with its district leaders on February 8 and a list of candidates for upazila parishad polls would be published after the meeting.
JP secretary general ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader told New Age that a list of 98 candidates of the party was yet to be finalised though elections to those upazilas would to be held on February 19. Likewise, no list of candidates for the 117 upazilas, which would go to polls in the second phase on February 27, has yet been finalised.
Party sources said that only 79 application forms had been sold since January 19 when the selling started.
