The second phase of Biswa Ijtema, the second largest congregation of the Muslims after hajj, entered its 2nd day on Saturday with Islamic scholars from different countries delivering sermons on various aspects of Islam.
Several lakh Muslim devotees, both from home and abroad, are converging on the congregation venue and attending the prayers with reciting the name of Allah and hearing the sermons.
Maulana Haji Abdul Wahab of Pakistan delivered sermons in Urdu after Fajr prayers and Maulana Delwar Hossain of Bangladesh translated those in Bengali, UNB reported.
Meanwhile, two devotees died of old age complications at the Ijtema venue from Friday night till early Saturday.
Of the deceased, one was identified as Nur Mohammad, 70, a resident of Razarampur village in Sonaimuri upazila of Noakhali district, while the identity of the other could not be known immediately.
With the two, a total of seven devotees have died at the venue of the 2nd phase Biswa Ijtema so far.
The Namaz-e-janaza of the two devotees was held on the Ijtema ground after Fajr prayers.
Like the previous years, a dowry-free mass wedding ceremony will be held today, where marriages of 50 couples will be solemnised.
Indian scholar Zobayerul Hasan will conduct the weddings after the Asr prayers.
Five-tier security has been set up in and around the Biswa Ijtema area to ensure foolproof security.
Over 10,000 members of RAB-police were deployed in the Ijtema area.
The 2nd phase of Ijtema will end with Akheri Munajat (concluding prayers) at about 11:00 am on Sunday.
