Jamaat leader, 2 activists killedNew Age Online
A Jamaat-e-Islami leader and two Islami Chhatra Shibir activists have been killed in separate ‘gunfights’ with police in Jhenaidah and Satkhira, bdnews24.com reported.
Jhenaidah’s Kotchandpur police station officer-in-charge Shahjahan Ali claimed three policemen were injured in the ‘skirmish’ at the upazila’s Naodapara High School in the early hours of Sunday.
He identified the deceased as Enamul Haq, 45, finance secretary of Jamaat’s Kotchandpur unit.
Haq is accused in cases over attacking police, obstructing government duties, and snatching weapons from police, said the OC.
He said the law enforcing agencies carried out a joint raid based on a tip-off that 'terrorists' were holding a ‘secret meeting’ at Naodapara village.
‘They exploded bombs and opened fire on us as we approached the Naodapara High School at around 1:30am,’ OC said. ‘The law enforcers fired back in retaliation.’
After a 15-minute gunfight, police recovered a pistol, three handmade bombs and found an injured man.
Villagers identified him, said the OC.
Doctors at the Jhenaidah sadar hospital declared him dead when he was taken there at around 4:00am.
OC Shahjahan Ali said police sub-inspectors Moktar Hossain and Mizanur Rahman and constable Joydeb Kumar were injured in the gunfight.
Meanwhile, two activists of the Islami Chhatra Shibir, Jamaat’s student front, have been killed in a separate gunfight with police in Satkhira in the early hours of Sunday.
Debhata police station’s inspector Tarek Biswas said two policemen were also injured in the late-night raid at the upazila’s Sakhipur union.
He identified the deceased as Debhata unit Shibir secretary Abul Kalam, 22, and his associate Maruf Hasan, 24.
Kalam is the son of Kulia village’s Akbar Ali. He is a first year honours student at Satkhira college.
Maruf is the son of Jamaat leader Ashraful Islam of the same village.
Two pipe-guns, five crude bombs and five rounds of bullets have been recovered from the spot, police said.
