400 delegates participate in BUGMUN 2014

BRAC University with the help of its Students Affairs Office recently held BRAC University Global Model United Nations (BUGMUN) 2014 on its residential campus at Savar in January 17–21.
The five-day event with the participation of more than 400 delegates from across Bangladesh and some other countries such as Nigeria, India, Nepal, Costa Rica and Pakistan was inaugurated in Army Golf Garden in the capital.
The BRAC founder and chairperson, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, also chairperson of the university board of trustees, inaugurated the event as chief guest.
BUGMUN has been organised by the International Association of Business Communicators of BRAC University.
Since the inception of Model United Nations (MUN), it has created a platform for the youths to transform their potential in the arena of diplomacy, international relations, leadership, communication and innovation excellence through research, public speaking, negotiation, debates along with critical thinking, teamwork and leadership skills.
There were 12 committees in total including two special ones —Crisis Committee, FIFA-UESA.
The theme of this year’s conference was ‘Post 2015: Envisioning a Better Future for the World.’
The theme concentrates on a diverse range of development activities including fighting poverty, ensuring education and healthcare for all, environmental protection, immunity from life-threatening diseases, and many more.
Throughout the event, there were lots of debates and discussions regarding the given agendas followed up by nightly social events called ‘Global Night’ which involved getting to know all the participating delegates.
It was a unique experience for the young delegates as they got the opportunity to interact with different people, not only from their own country but also with people from all over the world.
There were several performances by distinguished artists and groups such as ‘Faceless,’ ‘Fire-breathers’ and singer Elita Karim.
There was also a special session on January 20, ‘Mid Night Crisis,’ which included discussions on the European Union, environmental degradation, lack of money, problem of football schedule, human trafficking etc.
The last day of the event involved the ‘draft resolution,’ followed by the long-awaited award ceremony.
There were four awards — ‘best delegate award,’ ‘best position paper award,’ ‘outstanding award,’ and ‘special mention award.’
The event ended with a ‘Gala Night’ for all participants to rejoice with a sumptuous dinner.
BUGMUM 2014 left the participants with lots of fond memories.
The BUGMUN secretary general, Ratul Dev, led the event with assistance of Mahfuza Ferdousy Sarwar, Hiroq Dev Roy, Shabab A Mahfuz, Naim Hossain, Nazir Ahmed Zihad, Jawad Hossain and Maliha Ehsan.
