Fakhrul, five others get anticipatory bail

New Age Online

The High Court on Monday granted anticipatory bail to six senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders in separate cases relating to the death of people in arson attacks in November and December last year.
A bench of Justice Borhan Uddin and Justice KM Kamrul Kader also issued a rule on the government asking it to explain why the BNP leaders would not be granted regular bail in the cases.
The court passed the order after hearing separate bail petitions filed by BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Aman Ullah Aman, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Abdus Salam.
Fakhrul was granted a six-week bail in one case. Abbas, Salam and Gayeshwar were granted four weeks’ bail in four cases. Amir Khasru was granted four weeks’ bail in two cases in Chittagong. Aman Ullah received a four-week bail in nine cases.
Supreme Court Bar Association president AJ Mohammad Ali, former president Zainul Abedin and Nitai Roy Chowdhury moved the bail petitions while deputy attorney general Mohammad Selim and assistant attorney general Aminur Rahman Chowdhury opposed.
