Inqilab reporter on two-day remandNew Age Online
A Dhaka court here on Monday granted two-day remand to quiz a diplomatic correspondent of the daily Inqilab for what the prosecution argued to learn about sources the reporter had used while writing a ‘rumoured’ story.
The police on Thursday evening sealed off the office of the Bangla daily and its printing press terminating publications of the newspaper.
Earlier, detectives raided the office of the daily in Dhaka and picked up four newsmen from there over the publication of a ‘rumoured’ report that had said Indian troops aided Bangladesh’s Joint Force operation in the bordering district of Satkhira.
Critics say arrest of Ahmed Atik, the diplomatic correspondent of the Inqilab, is seen as how the long hands of the government might shut a newspaper before a trial.
Police had sought a five-day remand in the case filed with Wari police station under the Information and Communication Technology Act (ICT), 2006.
The case was lodged under the Section 57(1), 57 (2) of the Information and Communication Technology Act 2006 and Section 505 of the Penal Code.
Metropolitan magistrate SM Ashikur Rahman passed the order after hearing both bail and remand petitions.
The court also rejected the bail pleas of Inqilab News Editor Rabiulla Ulla Robi and Deputy Chief Reporter Rafiq Mohammad and ordered the authority to send them to jail.
KM Feroj Ali, a sub-inspector of Detective Branch of police and also the investigation officer of the case said the remand was necessary to grill Atik to learn if anyone had provoked him to manufacture such ‘fabricated’ story.
