Movement, polls boycott prove a success: BNPStaff Correspondent
Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said on Saturday that the opposition’s movement and boycott of the January 5 ‘unilateral’ polls proved ‘absolutely successful’.
‘In response to party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s call, 95 per cent of the voters did not cast their votes in the farcical January 5 polls, 153 constituencies had no candidates other than those of Awami League and 50 candidates in the rest 143 constituencies boycotted the elections on the polling day… It is an absolute success of BNP’s movement’.
‘It is the Awami League which is now suffering from a sense of being let down as they have forcibly taken over the state power’, he said while speaking at a discussion marking the 78th anniversary of birth of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at the Jatiya Press Club in the afternoon. The BNP organised the discussion.
Mosharraf said the newly formed cabinet was like one of Aesop’s fables that told the story of two cats sharing a cake with the help of a monkey where the monkey gained.
‘Through the elections that witnessed a low turnout and most of the seats won by ruling party candidates uncontested, the AL has formed a cabinet in which there is no existence of the opposition... Ershad’s Jatiya Party did not take part in the elections, but they are in the cabinet,’ the BNP leader said.
Mosharraf alleged that with a non-existent opposition, the AL was going to establish a one-party rule as they did in the past by forming the BKSAL. ‘Their dreams of holding power after establishing BKSAL did not last long, and they would meet the same fate this time too,’ he said.
The BNP leader said the opposition had long been in the streets for a legitimate demand – a non-party neutral government to oversee polls. ‘And it has been proved that an inclusive and participatory election could not be held under a partisan government’.
Mosharraf asked the party men to take preparations with a ‘renewed zeal’ to restore the ‘lost democracy’.
BNP standing committee member Abdul Moin Khan, chairperson’s advisers Osman Faruque, Shawkat Mahmud, former Dhaka University vice-chancellor Emajuddin Ahmed, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists president Ruhul Amin Gazi, Jatiya Press Club president Kamal Uddin Sabuj and BRAC University teacher Pias Karim, among others, addressed the discussion.
