University admissions in limbo

Mohiuddin Alamgir

Academic life of students seeking admission to the public universities stands in limbo as many universities are yet to complete the admission process while 14 of them are yet to take admission tests.
Rescheduling of admission tests for several times might prolong the academic life of the students concerned as well as impact adversely on the academic calendar of the universities, feared the University Grants Commission and the university authorities.
Admission tests for Jahangirnagar University, Khulna University, Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, Islamic University in Kushtia, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet, Jessore Science and Technology University, Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University in Tangail, Pabna University of Science and Technology, Noakhali Science and Technology University, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Sylhet Agricultural University, Sher-E-Bangla Agriculture University in Dhaka, Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University are yet to be held.
Authorities blamed political turmoil and frequent blockade enforced by opposition political parties for the deferral of the admission tests. Several universities are yet to fix the date for admission tests.
Jahangirnagar University suspended admission tests because of teachers’ movement and the combined tests for admission to Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and Jessore Science and Technology University scheduled for November 30, 2013 was postponed amid protests in Sylhet.
University sources said that admission tests for first-year bachelor’s courses at the Rajshahi University were deferred for five times. The admission tests now will be held in January 23-27.
Admission tests have been deferred for the third time to January 17-18 at Comilla University and January 18 at Islamic University and for the second time to January 17 at Patuakhali Science and Technology University, January 21-22 at Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University and January 30 at Begum Rokeya University.
Admission tests for Khulna University and Noakhali Science and Technology University have also been rescheduled and will now be held between February 27 and March 1 and in January 24-25 respectively.
The authorities of Jahangirnagar University, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Jessore Science and Technology University, Sylhet Agricultural University, Sher-E-Bangla Agriculture University, Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University are yet to fix the date for admission tests.
Khulna University registrar Abdul Mannan said that they were trying hard to set a date but failed for some reasons.
Besides, Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Jagannath University, Chittagong University completed admission tests amid blockades and general strikes. They are, however, yet to complete admission procedure till Monday.
In the past several years, the admission process usually completed in November and December.
A total of 7.45 lakh students passed the Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent examinations in 2013 and were waiting to be enrolled at higher educational institutions.
The University Grants Commission chairman, AK Azad Chowdhury, said that admission tests for universities were in jeopardy. He also feared that the delay in admission tests might have a long-term adverse impact on the academic calendar of the institutions.
