Chinese envoy meets KhaledaNew Age Online
Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka Li Jun met BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan office Saturday evening, UNB reported.
The 45-minute meeting that started around 7:42pm was held at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.
It was the first meeting of Khaleda at her office since December 26 as the government reportedly kept her under house arrest following her announcement of ‘March for Democracy’ programme from a press conference on December 24.
Earlier, the US and German ambassadors and the UK and Canadian High Commissioners met Khaleda at her residence, during her reported captivity.
Khaleda came to her Gulshan office around 7:40pm, after a gap of 14 days and a week after the January-5 violent national election boycotted by her party and its allies.
Party sources said the BNP chief and the Chinese envoy discussed various issues relating to mutual interest of the two countries, country’s latest political situation, just-held national election and post-election violence.
BNP standing committee member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, and BNP chairperson’s advisers Reaz Rahman and Sabihuddin Ahmed were present at the meeting.
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying in a regular briefing in Beijing on January 9 said the country has been following the political situation in Bangladesh and hoped that the political parties here will give priority to political stability, social harmony and economic growth considering the country’s fundamental interests.
Chunying also said China hopes that political forces in Bangladesh could realise political stability, social tranquility and economic growth through dialogue and consultation with the long-term and fundamental interests of the country in mind.
