60-hr hartal continues slackly on 3rd dayNew Age Online
The third and last day of the BNP-led 18-party alliance’s 60-hour countrywide hartal, demanding the cancellation of Sunday’s election results, is passing off without any incident of violence today (Wednesday), UNB reported.
Despite an indefinite blockade continuing, the opposition combine originally enforced a 48-hour shutdown at 6:00am on Monday which was scheduled to end at 6:00am on Wednesday.
However, the alliance on Tuesday extended the shutdown by 12 hours until 6:00pm today.
In the capital, any picketing of opposition activists centering the shutdown was not seen in the morning.
Movement of public transport on the city streets was somewhat more than the previous day while rickshaws, CNG-run auto-rickshaws and battery-run easy-bikes were dominating there.
However, no long-route bus departed from or arrived in the city during the hartal.
Law enforcers took position at different strategic points to fend off any trouble.
On the other hand, any sort of incident of picketing centering the hartal was not reported from elsewhere in the country.
The second day of the hartal passed off amid sporadic clashes and vandalism that left two people dead in Feni and Sirajganj.
The opposition alliance’s fresh hartal call came hours after the closure of voting for the 10th national election on Sunday that saw low voter turnout and massive violence, leaving 19 people dead across the country.
The ruling Awami League, however, swept the violence-hit and low turnout election.
The opposition boycotted the election as its demand for a non-partisan interim government to oversee the polls went unheeded.
Meanwhile, the opposition asked the government to quit and take initiatives for holding the election under a non-party caretaker government through talks.
