Results withheld for 8 seats as polls suspended at 540 centres

The Election Commission has suspended polling at about 550 polling stations causing suspension of the announcement of election results for eight parliamentary constituencies in the 10th parliamentary elections held on Sunday because of violence that killed 18 people.
An election commissioner told New Age that the commission decided to organise the polling at the suspended centres on January 16.
The chief election commissioner, Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, however, told reporters that the returning officers of the respective constituencies would fix the date in a day or two for the polls.
The suspension of polling withheld the election results for Dinajpur 4, Kurigram 4, Gaibandha 1 Gaibandha 3, Gaibandha 4, Bogra 7, Jessore 5 and Lakshmipur 1 constituencies.
In Dinajpur 4, polls were suspended at 57 polling centres having 1,33,046 voters, which was more than the difference between the votes bagged by the first two leading candidates.
Ruling Awami League candidate Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali bagged 68,088 votes while his nearest rival Workers Party candidate Enamul Haque Sarker polled 1,380 votes at the rest of the polling stations at the constituency.
In Kurigram 4, voting was suspended at two polling stations having 7,257 voters, while Ruhul Amin of Anwar Hossain Manju-led Jatiya Party got 30,544 votes and AL’s Zakir Hossain got 23,947 votes.
In Gaibandha 1, polling was suspended at 54 centres having 1,38,133 voters, while Awami League’s Manjurul Islam Liton got 68,993 votes and Jatiya Party’s Md Abdul Kader Khan polled 8,386 votes at the rest polling stations.
In Gaibandha 3, polls were suspended at 80 polling stations having 2,24,302 voters, while AL’s Yunuch Ali Sarker bagged 70,664 votes and independent candidate polled 12,781 votes.
In Gaibandha 4, polls were suspended at 72 polling centres having 2,00,077 voters, while independent candidate Abul Kalam Azad polled 59,862 votes and AL’s Monowar Hossain bagged 18,806 votes.
In Bogra 7, voting suspended at 46 polling stations having 1,15,865 voters, while Altaf Ali of the Jatiya Party faction led by HM Ershad bagged 7,043 votes and ATM Aminul of Jatiya Party faction led by Anwar Hossain Manju polled 3,175 votes.
In Jessore 5, polls were suspended at 60 polling stations having 1,39,296 voters, while AL’s Khan Tipu Sultan bagged 30,531 votes and and independent candidate Swapan Bhattacharya polled 18,331 votes.
In Lakshmipur 1, polls were suspended at 21 polling stations having 50,279 voters, while Bangladesh Tariqat Federation’s MA Awal with election symbol ‘boat’ bagged 32,057 votes and independent candidate Shafiqul Islam got 20,911.
