Election in accordance with constitution, reiterates PMNew Age Online
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina pledged to hold the next election in accordance with constitutional process.
‘As an elected government we swore to uphold democratic process, so next January 5 polls will be held in line with the constitution.’
The televised speech of the PM was broadcast at 7:00pm Thursday as part of the AL's electioneering for the January 5 parliamentary polls.
‘We hoped that main opposition would take part in the election keeping confidence on people but BNP did not do so despite our sincere efforts.’
The prime minister claimed that they tried to bring BNP into election with sincere efforts. ‘I repeatedly called on the BNP leader since 2010 to come along the way of a peaceful understanding through dialogue,’ she said.
Sheikh Hasina criticised the opposition leader as ‘she (Khaleda Zia) rejected the proposal of dialogue and preferred the path of violence.’
The prime minister firmly said the election will be held under a free and strong election commission - ‘not under any unelected person’.
Hasina highlighted the success stories of her government along with the promises she had already made in the election manifesto for the next five years.
The prime minister, in her last address to the nation on October 18, had proposed for an election-time all-party government.
The election commission allowed chiefs of the six political parties out of total 12 contesting the January 5 elections to address the nation through the state-owned BTV and Bangladesh Betar.
The six parties include ruling Awami League, HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party, Anwar Hossain Monzu-led Jatiya Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Workers Party of Bangladesh and newly floated Bangladesh Nationalist Front.
