Yusuf was Khulna Peace Committee chairman: FF Habibur

New Age Online

Freedom fighter Shikder Habibur Rahman Thursday detained Jamaat leader AKM Yusuf was introduced as Khulna Peace Committee chairman in a meeting on April 22, 1971 at Kachua Circle Office (CO) auditorium in Bagerhat.
Facing cross-examination by Yusuf’s defence counsel Mizanul Islam for the second day at the International Crimes Tribunal-2, Habibur said he knew Yusuf since 1970 when the accused contested the National Assembly polls from the area.
Yusuf was in the dock.
Responding to a defence question, the witness said in line with Yusuf’s order, the Muslim League and Jamaat men attacked 10 nearby Hindu villages, which included Bisherkhola, Gajalia, Dhopkhali, Bhasha, Moghia, Khalishakhali, Chhoto Andaharmanik, Boro Andharmanik, Nimtakathi and Ariamardan.
Habibur, 61, of village Bichhot under Kachua in Bagerhat testified as the 18th prosecution witness against Yusuf on December 11, 2013. He said Yusuf addressed a Peace Committee meeting on April 22, 1971 at Kachua CO auditorium and ordered to eliminate Awami League men, freedom fighters and Hindus from the country.
On hearing this, the Jamaat and Muslim League men rapidly left the place, attacked nearby 10 Hindu majority villages, committed rape, looting and arson attacks there and brought the booty to Kachua CO office, he said, adding Yusuf later left Kachua for Bagerhat with the booty through waterway by a launch.
Facing the cross-examination, the witness rejected a defence suggestion that Yusuf did not go to the Kachua CO Office on April 22, 1971.
As his cross-examination ended, the tribunal adjourned the proceedings until January 9.
