Blockade continues with stray incidents on 2nd day

New Age Online

The second day of the nationwide nonstop blockade, enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance to resist the January 5 ‘one-sided’ parliamentary polls, is going on amid stray incidents of violence today (Thursday), reports UNB.
The blockade programme would continue until further announcement, as declared by the party.
In the capital, blockaders blasted 2-3 crude bombs on the Topkhana road under Shahbagh thana around 8:40am.
However, none was injured in the explosion.
A bus of Pallabi Super Service on the Gulistan-Pallabi route was torched by miscreants near Sony Cinema in Mirpur-2 around 9:35am.
On information, firefighters came in and doused the flames.
Rickshaws, auto-rickshaws and battery-run three wheelers were dominating the city streets.
Presence of public transport on the city streets was higher than the first day of the blockade although no long-route bus entered or left the city.
In Gazipur, three people sustained burn injuries as miscreants set fire to a truck by hurling a petrol bomb at Shafipur in Kaliakoir upazila on Wednesday night.
In Natore, blockaders set fire by burning tyres on the Harishpur Bypass Road and in Station Bazaar area of the town in the morning.
Meanwhile, Mofazzal Hossain, a vegetable trader, got injured as  blockaders hurled brickbats at a  truck he was in at Dighapatia in the town on Wednesday night.
In Satkhira, a truck was torched by blockaders near Bhomra port in Sadar upazila around 11:00pm on Wednesday.
The first day of the blockade passed off peacefully barring some stray incidents of violence that left a Jubo Dal man dead in firing by BGB in Chandpur sadar upazila on Wednesday.
The opposition alliance has been on nonstop agitation programme since the Election Commission announced the election schedule on November 25 fixing the balloting date for January 5.
They want the government to cancel the election schedule clearing the way for holding the 10th parliamentary polls with participation of all the parties under a non-party administration.
The 18-party has already enforced countrywide road-rail-waterway blockade for 22 days (501 hours) since November 26 in five spells –71-hour, 131-hour, 144-hour and 72-hour and 83-hour ones — after the announcement of the election schedule that left at least 120 people dead.
