Textbook Festival today
Free notebooks for students in future, says PMStaff correspondent
The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Wednesday inaugurated the Textbook Festival to be celebrated today pledging to provide students with notebook computers in future.
The festival would be celebrated today, for the fourth consecutive year, in all schools and madrassahs across the country for the distribution of 31.77 crore free textbooks to 4.3 crore students of pre-primary, primary and secondary schools and madrasssahs by the government.
The government did not hold the programme on January 1, due to holiday on the occasion of Akehri Chahar Shamba.
Hasina inaugurated the festival on Wednesday giving free books to some pre-primary, primary and secondary school students at a function at Ganabhaban, her official residence.
Addressing the ceremony, Hasina pledged to give notebook computers to all students in future so that they can download books from internet.
The festival starts 11:00am today at Government Laboratory School in the capital with education minister Nurul Islam Nahid as the chief guest.
The government arranged the programme coinciding with opposition-sponsored countrywide blockade, which caused tension among the students and their guardians.
Nahid told New Age that they were compelled to hold the festival amid blockade for the sake of education.
Officials said that all the textbooks to be distributed this year already reached the schools and madrasas across the country despite blockades enforced by the opposition.
Government would distribute 1.80 crore books among pre-primary students, 11.37 crore among primary students, 13.77 crore to secondary students and 4.62 crorebooks to ibtadayi and dakhil madrassah students.
