Simon wins Asian Pitch awardCultural Correspondent
Bangladeshi filmmaker Kamar Ahmad Simon has won The Asian Pitch award for the concept of his next docu-film.
Singapore-based The Asian Pitch is the result of a common vision among broadcasters NHK of Japan, KBS of South Korea, PTS of Taiwan, and MediaCorp of Singapore.
Along with Kamar Ahmad Simon, two other documentary makers Da Jung Jang from Taiwan and Chaitali Mukherjee from India have won the award.
This year, out of the 164 submitted proposals, 11 filmmakers were invited to present
their ideas in Singapore and from them three best projects were declared as winners of this year’s pitch.
The Asian Pitch aims to uncover human welfare stories, at the same time, to discover and promote new and hidden talents in Asia. The four major Asian broadcasters will not only fund but also screen the winning films in their respective primetime slots. The broadcasters will further market and distribute the programs in international markets.
‘It is a very prestigious achievement for me. I hope to complete my project within the next year,’ Kamar Ahmad Simon told New Age.
Early this year Kamar’s first film Shunte Ki Pao! (Are You Listening!) won the Grand Prix in the international competition as the best feature of 35th Cinema du reel held in Paris and received the Jury Award in Film Southasia 2013. Last year the film was the Curtain Opener of 55th Dok-Leipzig, the oldest documentary festival of the world and was also at the Official Selection of 25th IDFA.
