Dhaka worried over Taliban threat to attack mission in IslamabadDiplomatic Correspondent
The banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan has threatened to attack Bangladesh high commission in Islamabad following the execution of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Molla on war crime charges, Pakistan’s The Nation newspaper reported Thursday.
A foreign ministry spokesman in Dhaka told New Age that they had expressed concern to the Pakistan authorities about the security of the Bangladesh mission in the light of the Nation’s report. ‘We have taken up the matter with the Pakistan authorities and they have assured us of ensuring safety and security of our mission,’ said Shameem Ahsan, director general, external publicity wing of the foreign ministry.
The Nation said that law enforcement agencies still feared a terrorist attack on the Bangladesh high commission although security around the mission in Pakistan had been enhanced manifold and fresh security directions had been issued to the high commissioner of Bangladesh,
According to well-placed sources, the daily said law enforcement agencies had submitted a report to the interior ministry quoting a security agency that Taliban had expressed annoyance with the Bangladesh government over the execution of Abdul Quader Molla and could attack the Bangladesh mission. The unnamed security agency officials had called for preventive measures in the wake of the threats.
A senior official of a law enforcement agency while talking to The Nation said they had chalked up an elaborate security plan for security of the Bangladesh mission and security had been enhanced at major embassies in the federal capital.
