9 get life term for killing two SUST students

Staff Correspondent . Sylhet

The Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal on Thursday sentenced nine people to life imprisonment for killing two students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology two years ago.
The tribunal judge, Dilip Kumar Devnath, also fined them Tk 20,000 each, in default, to suffer one more year in jail, court sources said.
The convicts are Gulzar Miah alias Gulzar Majhi, Chhail Miah, Shahin Ahmad, Lal Miah, Jalal Miah, Rakib Ahmad, Sayeem Miah, Abdullah and Selim Miah of Nalkut village in sadar upazila of the district.
Of them, Gulzar Majhi and Selim Miah were tried in absentia, the sources said.
According to the prosecution story, Dipankar Ghosh Anik and Khayrul Kabir, second year students of chemical engineering and polymer science, along with some of their friends, including three female classmates, set out for a cruise in the River Chengerkhal at Badaghat in the city on December 16, 2011.
But, a gang of 10 pirates attacked them while they were returning to the campus by a rented engine-boat of Gulzar Majhi.
The pirates beat up Anik and Kabir mercilessly and dumped them into the river as they tried to resist them from harassing their female classmates.
Later, the attackers looted valuables, including mobile phones and cash money, from the students.
The bodies of Anik and Kabir, who came from Basabo and Nawabganj in the capital Dhaka, were recovered from the river the following day.
SUST registrar Ishfaqul Hossain filed a case with Jalalabad police station in this regard.
Police pressed charges against the nine people on June 15, 2012. Later, the case was transferred to the speedy trial tribunal on May 12 this year.
After examining witnesses and evidence, the tribunal judge handed down the verdict in the afternoon.
Public prosecutor Kishore Kumar Kar stood for the state while defence counsel Jalal Ahmed for the accused.
In an instant reaction after the announcement of the verdict, Anik’s father Dipak Ghosh told reporters that they were not happy with the life sentence to the killers.
‘We hoped the court would award capital punishment to the accused who killed my innocent son and his friend. I would go to the higher court for proper justice,’ he said.
