151 candidates for 10th parliament elected unopposedNew Age Online
At least 151 candidates are set to be elected unopposed in the 10th parliamentary elections scheduled for January 5, as they remained the lone candidates in their respective constituencies, sources at the Election Commission said.
The Election Commission has prepared a draft list of such candidates after the last date for the withdrawal of candidatures on Friday.
Of the 151 candidates, 127 are from the ruling Awami League, 18 from HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party, three from Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal led by Hasanul Huq Inu, two from Workers' Party led by Rashed Khan Menon and one from Jatiya Party faction led by Anwar Hossain Monju.
Ershad, who withdrew from the elections on ground of a ‘non-inclusive’ election, had ordered his party candidates to withdraw their nomination papers. Many of them applied for withdrawing nominations. But the returning officers did not accept some of the applications, including one of Ershad himself for the Rangpur 2 constituency.
Ershad earlier on Thursday sent a letter to the Election Commission asking them not to allocate Jatiya Party’s election symbol ‘plough’ to any of the candidates contesting the elections.
A total of 1,107 candidates from 20 political parties, mostly belonging to the Awami League-led ruling alliance, submitted nomination papers for contesting the 10th parliamentary elections.
Main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its allies are boycotting the polls.
