Stop 'unilateral' polls for the sake of democracy: BNP

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Saturday alleged that the government is heading toward a ‘unilateral’ election, in a bid to demolish the country’s democratic process.
‘Today, this government, is heading toward a ‘unilateral’ election to kill the democracy,‘ said Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, the BNP standing committee member.
The senior BNP leader made the remarks while talking to the reporters after placing wreath at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial at Mirpur in the city this morning.
The leader of the opposition and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, along with her party men, placed wreath at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial.
Khandaker Mosharraf also criticised the government for bagging 116 seats unopposed.
‘We didn’t notice such kind of loathsome incident in any democratic country,’ he said.
Media reports say the ruling Awami League now requires only 49 candidates to win to have a majority in the 10th parliament.
The BNP policy maker called on the Awami League-led government to refrain from holding a ‘one-sided’ election.
‘The country’s democracy will be staked, if polls were hold without the participation of all the parties,’ he said.
