Shahbagh protesters, who started rallying in early February for the capital punishment of convicted war criminal Abdul Quader Molla, on Thursday expressed their delight after the Appellate Division cleared the way for the execution of Quader Molla.
Activists of the youth-led platform, campaigning for the death penalty of all war criminals, also have continued sitting in at Shahbagh for the second consecutive days since Tuesday night after the Appellate Division chamber judge stayed the execution of Jamaat’s assistant secretary general Quader.
‘We have received the verdict that wanted against Quader Molla,’ the Ganajagaran Mancha spokesman, Imran H Sarkar, told reporters in an immediate reaction after the Appellate Division had rejected Quader’s review petition. ‘We will continue to sit in until Quader Molla is hanged.’
The protesters also walked down the surrounding roads in a procession. In the evening, they also brought out a torch procession parading Bangla Motor and Karwan Bazar roads.
Earlier on February 5, a group of youth took to the streets at Shahbagh hours after International Crimes Tribunal 2 sentenced Quader to imprisonment to life in prison on charge of crimes against humanity. The protests flared up across the country under the platform of Ganajagaran Mancha.
The Appellate Division on September 17, after hearing appeals preferred by both the government and Quader, revised the sentence to death sentence.
