Does quality education depend on exam alone?
WHILE talking to journalists recently, the education minister said there would be no promotion without examination. If I recall correctly, without conducting 70 classes, according to the curriculum, in all core subjects like mathematics, English, Bangla, science, social Science in each term, no examination can be taken by schools authorities.
According to the original routine, the primary school certificate examinations were supposed to end by November 28. The students have already lost nine days of their academic session due to the PSC examinations. Actually, it was around 11 days, i.e. before and after the exam days, as no classes were held and 17 days were also lost due to junior school certificate examinations.
The secondary school certificate examinations will begin on February 9 and it will continue until March 17, 2014; so, there will be no academic sessions for about a month and 10 days.
Moreover, there are first term and final examinations. There are no academic sessions during pre-test and test examinations for SSC candidates. Test examinations are also held for PSC and JSC examinations. So, round the year, schools are very busy with examinations.
We know that there are 185 holidays in a year. A few days ago, a report was published in a daily that students in Bangladesh have the lowest contact hour with teachers among SAARC countries.
