Five killed in Lakshmipur in BNP-RAB clash

New Age Online

Five people were killed and at least 50 others were injuried during a clash between RAB and the activists of main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday.

Three of the victims are: Iqbal Mahmood Jewel, vice-president of district unit Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, Mahbubur Rahman, a Juba Dal activist and Shihab, a Shibir activist. Identities of the two others couldn’t be known.
BNP claimed the five were killed when RAB opned fire on them. RAB denied the allegation.
An additional police super of Lakshmipur told New Age that he had heard about the death of three people. But he could not give the details.
Police said quoting local sources that a team of RAB launched a drive in the morning in the house of Shahabuddin Sabu, the general secretary of district unit BNP in a bid to arrest him.
RAB members entered Sabu’s house breaking the door and fired shot at his leg, family member of Shahabuddin said.
As the news of his injury spread, local Juba Dal members brought out a procession at Chawk Bazar area under Sadar upazila, protesting the incident, where the RAB members fired several rounds of gunshots that left Jewel dead on the spot.
The body of Jewel was unattended for quite sometime on the ground and later it went missing, witnesses said.
RAB media and legal wing director, Wing Commander ATM Habibur Rahman, told New Age that a law and order situation was created there when the law enforcers took ‘lawful action’.
As a sequel, another clash took place near Jhumur Cinema Hall, where the law enforcers fired shots, leaving 12 people injured.
Mahbub and Shihab succumbed to their bullet injuries after being taken to the sadar hospital.
Local BNP unit called a daylong hartal in the district for Saturday protesting the incident.
The BNP-led 18-party alliance enforced the countrywide 144-hour blockade beginning Saturday to push for cancellation of the election schedule and holding the next general elections under a non-party caretaker government.
