The visiting UN assistant secretary general for political affairs Oscar Fernández-Taranco Monday held another round of meeting with a delegation of Awami League at the residence of prime minister’s foreign affairs adviser Gowher Rizvi in Gulshan.
LGRD and cooperatives minister Syed Ashraful Islam, land minister Amir Hossain Amu, industries minister Tofail Ahmed, deputy speaker Showkat Ali, foreign affairs adviser to prime minister Gowher Rizvi, former commerce minister Faruk Khan, AL joint general secretary Mahbub Ul Alam Hanif and former diplomat Shahed Reza  were present in the meeting, as the members of the delegation.
The meeting started at 11.25 am and ended at about 12.15pm.
Although AL general secretary was supposed to brief the reporters, he left the residence of Gowher Rizvi along with other AL delegation members shortly after the meeting.
AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif told New Age that
Syed Ashraf might brief the reporters after another round of meeting between UN assistant secretary general and prime minister Sheikh Hasina, this afternoon.
About discussions in the meeting Hanif said that he was not authorized to talk about the meeting.
Earlier, Taranco had a meeting with leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami at Hotel Sonargaon in the capital.
A three-member delegation of Jamaat led by its assistant secretary general Abdur Razzak met the UN high official.
The meeting started at 10:00am and continued for half an hour.
The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has told the visiting UN assistant secretary general Oscar Fernández-Taranco that it wants ‘a peaceful election’.
‘We told him that if a level playing field and participation of all political parties could be ensured, political violence wouldn’t exist,’ Abdur Razzaq, the Jamaat leader said.
The UN envoy held this meeting over current political situation after sitting with Awami League, BNP and Jatiaya Party leaders.
