AL won̢۪t mind if polls shifted, says AmuNew Age Online
Land minister Amir Hossain Amu on Sunday said the Awami League will not raise any objection if the Election Commission switched the polls schedule.
He also said AL-led government has still been trying to negotiate with the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, to bring them to the up-coming 10th parliamentary polls, to be held on January 5.
Amir Hossain Amu, also the AL advisory council member, made the remarks while talking to the reporters at the secretariat.
Earlier on Saturday, Gowher Rizvi, foreign affairs adviser to the prime minister Sheikh Hasina, had informed the reporters that the UN official had called for deferring the polls schedule but the prime minister told him that the rescheduling was under the jurisdiction of the EC.
Rizvi talked to the newsmen after a one-on-one meeting between the prime minister Sheikh Hasina and the visiting UN assistant secretary-general for political affairs Oscar Fernández Taranco that was held at the PM’ official residence Ganabhaban.
Jatiya Party secretary general ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader said on Sunday that they have told the visiting UN assistant secretary-general for political affairs, that they want the EC reschedules the election schedule.
Amu, however, asserted that the election would be held in due time.
‘No matter which party join or boycott it,’ Amu said.
About ongoing oppositions 72-hour blockade programme, the new minister of the polls time ‘smaller cabinet’ said it is not a ‘democratic movement’, rather it’s a ‘mass killing’.
‘People are being killed every day in the name of movement,’ Amu added.
The BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance was protesting against the polls scheduled for January 5 next year and demanding for a non-party caretaker government for a free, fair and acceptable election.
The main opposition had earlier declared that it would not let the authorities conduct the election with the prime minister Sheikh Hasina at the helm.
