Religious, nat̢۪l minorities urge end to repressionStaff Correspondent
The Bangladesh Hindu, Buddhist and Christian Unity Council and the Bangladesh Adivasi Forum at a press conference on Wednesday called on the government to take adequate steps to stop attacks on religious and national minorities.
Leaders of the two organisations at a press conference at the National Press Club alleged that the minorities in different parts of the country were facing attacks as pre-election violence.
Rana Dasgupta, the general secretary of Unity Council, at the press conference said that in the past few weeks, the Hindus were attacked in Pabna, Barisal, Satkhira, Bogra, Sirajganj and Chittagong.
But government has failed to ensure security of religious minorities, he alleged.
The two organisations will form a human chain in front of the Press Club on Friday to push for their demands.
Sanjib Drong, the general secretary of the Adivasi Forum, placed a five-points demand including adequate measures to stop attack on religious and national minorities during pre-election conflicts, exemplary punishment of attackers on minorities, end to the use of religion in election campaigns and the inclusion of issue of safety of the minorities in the election manifesto of all political parties.
Kajal Debnath, a leader of the Unity Council, also demanded constitutional recognition of national minorities.
