Six killed, 65 injured TuesdayNew Age Online
At least six people were killed and sixty five were injured, of whom 10 received bullet wounds, during fierce clashes between police, BGB force and pro-blockade supporters in Chandpur, Satkhira and Chittagong districts on Tuesday.
They were killed in the 4th day of the road-rail-waterway blockade, enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance.
The BNP-led alliance Monday extended the 59-hour blockade that will now continue through 5:00pm Thursday as the Election Commission had not postponed the schedule for the 10th parliamentary election as demanded by the alliance.
In Chandpur, two persons including an adolescent were shot dead and five other were critically injured in violence with police and BNP-Jamaat men at Kali Bari area, Tuesday morning.
The deceased were identified as Siam, 14, a student of Chandpur Al-Amin academy who was affiliated with Shibir and Ratan, 23, an activist of Jatiyatabadi Chattra Dal, party sources said.
The local BNP and Shibir both claimed that the victims were killed by police firing.
Ruhul Amin, a duty doctor of Chandpur sadar hospital said they succumbed to their bullet injuries.
Chandpur Model Police Station officer-in-charge Mahbub Morshed confirmed the matter and said they fired the bullets on self defence as the BNP-Jamaat men threw crude bombs and bricks chips towards the law enforcers.
At least fifty people were injured in the fierce clash that took place at around 10:30am, witnesses and police said.
In Satkhira, two Shibir men, named Hossain Ali and Arizul Islam, were shot dead and another fifteen people were injured during separate clashes with police and Border Guard Bangladesh members and pro-blockade supporters at Sakhipur intersection in Debhata upazila and at Varashimla in Kaliganj upazila early this morning.
Assistant superintendent of police Laskar Tajul Islam (Kaliganj-Debhata circle) said the scuffle ensued on Satkhira-Kaliganj road at 5:00am when the law enforcers rushed there to disperse the pro-blockade supporters.
As situation worsened, the police and the BGB men were compelled to open fires to bring the situation under control, the ASP said. The both forces had fired some 100 rounds of bullets, he added.
In Chittagong, Shariful Islam Russel, 20, a Shwechchashebak Dal leader and Mahbub Alam, 32, a driver were killed in separate blockade violence today.
Russel was shot dead as pro-blockade supporters clashed with police at Sitakunda, and that the driver Mahbub died after a covered-van lost control and rammed into a tree after blockade campaigners hurled crude bombs near Seamen's Hostel area at around 2:00am.
