A young man was shot to death and 20 people were injured in a clash between activists of Awami League and the BNP-led 18-party alliance at Pukuria village in Shibganj upazila on Monday afternoon, reported UNB.
The deceased was identified as Rubel Hossain, 20, a human-hauler driver and son of Khalilur Rahman of the village.
Local BNP claimed Rubel as its activist although his family members said he was not involved in the politics.
Witnesses said the opposition activists took position at the Piling intersection at Kansat in the morning in support of the ongoing road-rail-waterway blockade.
They announced to resist Awami League candidate from Chapainawabganj-1 constituency (Shibganj) Golam Rabbani from filing the nomination to contest the 10th parliamentary polls billed for January 5.
As the news spread around that Rabbani had already filed the nomination, the 18-party men attacked the house of the ruling party contender at Pukuria around 2:00pm.
The clash erupted when the supporters of Rabbani tried to resist the opposition men.
Chases and counter-chases took place during the two-hour long melee when Rubel sustained bullet wounds.
Later, he died on the way to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex.
The houses of Rabbani and his brother Abu Bakar Fitu, a private car, two trucks and a good number of human-haulers and motorcycles were also torched during the mayhem.
Assistant police super Matiur Rahman said police and firefighters rushed in and doused the blaze.
Meanwhile, the local administration imposed Section 144 in Pukuria and nearby areas for an indefinite period.
Additional policemen and members of Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh have been deployed in the area to fend off further trouble.
