The 3rd day of the 72-hour road-rail-waterway blockade, sponsored by the BNP-led 18-party alliance, is passing off amid stray incidents of bomb blasts, vandalism, processions and clashes in different parts of the country today (Monday).
The opposition combine enforced the second spell of blockade at 6:00am on Saturday demanding cancellation of the schedule for the 10th parliamentary elections billed for January 5 and protesting the filing of ‘false cases’ against its leaders and activists.
It will end at 6:00am Tuesday.
In the capital, the first few hours of the day’s blockade were marked by clashes between police and the blockaders and explosions of crude bombs in different points.
There were 19 bomb explosions in five areas including North Badda, Middle Badda, Bhatara (Coca Cola), Khilgaon and Karwan Bazar areas in the morning.
At Karwan Bazar, blockaders hurled 4-5 crude bombs targeting a police van beside the office of the daily Prothom Alo around 7:00am.
Besides, activists of Swechchhasebak Dal, Juba Dal, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Jamaat-Shibir brought out separate processions in support of the blockade in Jurain, Khilgaon, New Market and Khilkhet areas.
Rickshaws and auto-rickshaws dominated the city streets in the morning.
However, no long-route buses left Mohakhali, Saydabad and Gabtoli terminals since morning fearing vandalism. But local busses were seen plying, though with few passengers, the city roads.
Huge law enforcers remained on guard on the city streets to avoid any untoward incident.
In Rajshahi, at least 20 people, including a policeman, got injured in a clash with blockaders in the Court Station area in the morning.
ABM Rezaul Karim, officer-in- charge of Rajpara Police Station, said police lobbed teargas shells and fired several sound grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the blockaders when they tried to block the road around 8:45am, triggering a clash.
Among the injured, a police constable named Shamsujjoha sustained bullet injury.
The blockaders torched a police pickup during the incident.
In Laxmipur, the opposition activists blocked different roads in the town by torching tyres and placing logs in the morning.
Meanwhile, at least eight people were injured in a clash between BNP activists and Awami League supporters in Torabganj area in Komalganj upazila on Sunday night.
The second day of the blockade passed off on Sunday amid violence, disrupting the normal life and wreaking havoc on the economy and education across the country.
The train communications of Chittagong with Dhaka and Sylhet, between Rajshahi and other parts of the country were halted as blockaders put barricades on rail tracks and removed fishplates.
The first day of the blockade was marked by violent incidents in different parts of the country that left four people dead in the capital, Chittagong, Jhenidah and Pabna districts.
On Friday night, BNP spokesperson Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the 72-hour blockade programme from Saturday 6:00am to Tuesday 6:00am.
The blockade is also meant for protesting denial of permission to it to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday afternoon and the continued repression and oppression on opposition leaders and activists.
