Lalan Festival begins on Oct 16 in Kushtia

The five-day-long Lalan Smaran Utsab (memorial festival) -2013, the largest annual arrangement by the Bauls, will be commenced on 16th October at the shrine complex of the most influential spiritual Baul emperor---Fakir Lalan Shah---at Chheuriya in Kushtia. The festival will mark the 123rd death anniversary of the great Baul of Bangkadesh. Thousands of Bauls, Shaines and other devotees from all over the country and elsewhere have already started to gather at the Shaine-Jee’s Akhra (social gathering) area, Baul followers said.
The festival will be inaugurated officially on 17 October, instead of 16 October due to Eid Ul Azha, by Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu. However, Kushtia deputy commissioner Belal Hossain will inaugurate the cultural programme on 16th October night, according to the revelers.
The festival will be continued till 20 October. Baul singers will perform various Lalan songs and cite teachings of Lalan philosophy through the mystic songs. A large number of Bauls will take part in the festival to commemorate their spiritual leader Shain-jee (Lalon Shah).
The shrine has been decorated beautifully for the festival. One of the main attractions of the event is the Baul Mela (fair).
The festival has been jointly organized by Lalan academy complex that look after Lalan Shah’s mazar and Kushtia district administrations.
Local police have taken enough security, said Kushtia Police superintendent Mafizuddin. Additional police have already been deployed while plain clothed police are patrolling the Shrine area to avert unwanted situation.
The deputy commissioner of Kushtia and also president of Lalan academy complex Belal Hossain told NEW AGE that they have taken all kinds of initiatives to organize the festival smoothly to mark the Lalan Shah’s 123rd death anniversary.
The Lalan academy complex’s secretary Rezanur Rahman Mukul told NEW AGE that they have decorated the Shain-jee dham (Shrine area) with illuminations and festoons.
The most influential mystic singer in the world, Lalan Shah had died on 1 Kartrik, 1297 in Bangla year (17 October, 1890). The devotees of Lalan have been observing his death anniversary since then.
