RMG workers take to streets for dues before EidStaff Correspondent
At least 30 people were injured as garment factory workers blocked road and clashed with the police in Ashulia on Monday for wages and festival allowance.
Hundreds of workers of Liberty Fashions Wear Limited started demonstrations in front of the factory in the morning and blocked Jirani-Shimulia road as the factory authorities had not yet paid their wage arrears and festival allowance.
The police charged batons, fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the workers.
Later, the workers blocked Dhaka-Tangail highway and engaged in clashes with the police.
The workers of Ruposhi Fashions Ltd at Dakkhinkhan also staged street demonstrations demanding wages and festival allowance before Eid-ul-Azha.
Labour leaders said that eight factories, which are the members of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, were yet to pay dues and festival allowance to the workers.
The BGMEA, however, claimed that almost 100 per cent factories had paid wages and allowances to workers before Eid.
‘All member-factories except Liberty Fashions have already cleared workers’ dues and allowances and we hope the problem would be solved by Monday,’ acting BGMEA president SM Mannan Kochi said at a press conference on Monday at its headquarters in the city.
Liberty Fashions has delayed payment of wages and allowances to the workers due to ‘order shortage’, he said.
Mannan said that the BGMEA had closely monitored situation in 1,000 small and medium factories to avoid labour unrest over wages and allowances before Eid.
Bangladesh Garment Workers and Employees League president Sirajul Islam Rony said that the workers of eight factories had not been paid all dues. He demanded effective initiatives of the government and the BGMEA to ensure payment of wages and allowances to the workers in all factories before the Eid.
