Music Mania at MusicOn 2013Sajid Rahman
For young university students with a passion for music and gaming, Saffron Garden was the place to be on October 4th. ‘MusicOn 2013 Round 1: feat. Shunno’ was about to kick start and nothing, not even the gloomy skies could dampen the spirit of the energetic crowd which had turned up for one of the most happening youth musical contest of the year. The first of the two rounds of the contest put together by 7Teen Events, had a lot to offer to meet the recreation cravings of the young generation. The event offered a game zone, dance and music recitals and most importantly, it gave the university students a platform to compete in a live music competition.
This first round featured teams from six reputed universities based in Dhaka, from which four moved to the next round to fight for the ultimate glory of becoming the champions and win a prize money of 100,000 taka!
The ambience at the venue was electric, colourful and perfectly set the tone for a fun filled day. From the beginning, the signature carnival games (mainly featuring Rock Band and Dance Central) in the ‘Game Room’, kept the audience mainly comprising university students gladly occupied, while the anticipation built up for the main attraction of the day- the musical battle of the six participating universities-IBA (JU), South East University, AIUB, BRACU, EWU and IBA (DU). The two stages-one for the dancers and the other for the bands, illuminated with bright lights, were waiting to be set on fire. The show started off once the order of the performances was decided by a lottery. IBA (JU) rolled it off and it was good with their cover of Shunno’s popular number ‘Amar Ami’. South East University enthralled the crowd too, with their melodious music and solid cover of ‘Godhulir Opare’, coupled with enthusiastic dancing. While the show went on, organisers distributed their promised glow sticks and pen drives to the crowd, fulfilling their quota of joy!
Yet, what seemed to bring the people fully to life were the performances of AIUB, BRACU and EWU. AIUB’s contingent was dynamic and synced their dance and song performances together in phases, which impressed everyone, including the band members of ‘Shunno’, the judges for the preliminary round. BRACU also gave a stellar performance and delighted the crowd. Their songs and synchronised dances were well above the benchmark. Not to be left out, EWU also pitched in a very packed and powerful performance, which was enjoyed by all present and highly acclaimed by the judges. The last performing university was IBA (DU). Although the performers of IBA put in their best and put up a good show, they did not seem to win over the crowd’s and the judges’ hearts as much as their predecessors did.
To cap off the spectacular evening, Shunno took the stage and pleased the crowd with one after another of their immensely popular tracks. Finally, after their performance, it was time for the much awaited results. The four teams to go through to the next round were South East University, AIUB, BRACU and EWU, with the AIUB contingent being declared winners of this round and earning them the privilege of being able to attend a practice session with Shunno.
The second round of MusicOn will take place in December this year, where the four qualifying universities will lock horns for the ultimate prize. 7Teen Events have already announced that they have got special surprises waiting for the final round, so expect more music, more dancing and enough thrills to leave you dizzy.
