An Islami Chhatra Shibir activist was killed in Chuadanga and 12 people including seven cops were injured as Shibir men clashed with the police at places across the country on Thursday.
The Jamaat-e-Islami-backed student organisation called a dawn-to-dusk general strike for October 13 in Chuadnga, Kushtia, Meherpur and Jhenaidah protesting against the killing of Shibir man, said Chuadnga sadar upazila Shibir president Shariful Islam.
He also said that Shibir would hold rallies in those districts on October 12.
Shibir brought out processions in different districts demanding the release of their central leaders before Eid.
In Chuadanga, Shibir activist Rafiqul Islam, 21, also a local madrassah student, was killed and another injured in police firing as they clashed with the police at Damurhuda upazila on Thursday afternoon.
Damurhuda police station officer-in-charge Ashan Habib told New Age that Shibir men brought out a procession at Darshana Rail Bazar around 3:00pm. At one stage, they tried to attack a local temple. They clashed with the police who tried to foil the attack.
The superintendent of police in Chuadanga, Abdur Rahim Shah Chowdhury, said that the police tried to resist the Shibir men while they were vandalising a puja mandap and the law enforcers fired 20 bullets as Shibir attacked them.
Uneasy calm griped the area as activists of Shibir and law enforcers were in battling mood till the report was filed at around 6:00pm.
More than 300 members of police, Rapid Action Battalion and Boarder Guard Bangladesh were deployed in the area.
In Dhaka, meanwhile, Shibir brought out sudden processions and blasted several crude bombs in Kamalapur and Mohakhali areas in the morning.
Locals said that 20-30 Shibir men brought out a sudden procession near BRTC bus depot at Kamalapur at around 9:00am. Five crude bombs were blasted from the procession.
The police later arrested five Shibir men — Abdullah Md Miftah, Soyeb Ahmed, Burhanuddin, Mushfiqur Rahman and Md Elias — and a mobile court sentenced them to imprisonment for one year, said Motijheel zone deputy commissioner Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman.
At Mohakhali, 25-30 activists of brought out a sudden procession at Wireless Gate at about 9:30am and exploded 4/5 crude bombs. Two Shibir men were held at the spot.
New Age correspondent in Rajshahi reported that 10 people including five policemen were injured as Shibir clashed with the police in the city’s Alokar Mor area at 12:30pm.
Locals said the activists brought out procession from Rani Bazar Madrassah Market area. The clash erupts as police tried to bar the procession.
Shibir men hurled crude bombs at the police, who reacted with firing tear gas shells and rubber bullets.
New Age correspondent in Jhenaidah reported that two policemen were injured as Shibir clashed with the police in Jhenaidah town in the morning. The police brought the situation under control firing six bullets and five tear gas shells.
Jhenaidah police station officer-in-charge Kazi Jalal Uddin Ahmed said that the injured policemen Sohan and Sazib were sent to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital.
