Sense of insecurity prevails among UP chairmenStaff Correspondent
Three union parishad chairmen in Paikgachha and Dumuria upazilas of Khulna district had filed general diaries with the police stations, seeking security of their lives.
They are Kazi Abdus Salam Bachchu, chairman of Godiapur union, and Ruhul Amin Biswas, chairman of Garhuikhali union under Paikgachha and Molla Mosharef Hossain Mofiz, chairman of Sadar union under Dumuria.
They had lodged general diaries last month after receiving threat over cell phone, the UP chairmen said.
Bachchu said that he had received threat over cell phone thrice from an anonymous caller for his refusal to pay toll. ‘So, I think my life is now at stake.’
Ruhul said that outlaws were roaming in the locality, brandishing firearms. ‘So, I am in fear of my life and feel insecure,’ he added.
Mofiz who received threat twice from outlaws for his refusal to pay toll echoed the same.
A number of UP chairmen were killed in the south-western region in last two years.
The latest victim was Zillur Rahman Mintu, chairman of Shinghajhuli union parishad under Chaugachha upazila in Jessore. Gunmen shot him dead on September 26.
Ruhul Amin, chairman of Naldanga UP under Jhenaidah sadar upazila, was killed on June 16 while Khan Zahid Hasan, Fakirhat sadar UP chairman in Bagerhat, on May 18, Abdur Razzak, Putkhali UP chairman under Sharsha upazila of Jessore, on March 24 and Nurul Islam, Ambarhia UP chairman under Khoksha upazila of Kushtia, on August 28 last year.
As a result, a sense of insecurity was prevailing among UP chairmen in the south-western region.

Bangladesh Union Parishad Forum’s Khulna divisional unit president Shahidul Islam Pintu told New Age that many UP chairmen in Khulna division filed general diaries with the police stations, seeking security of their lives. But, the law enforcers did not ensure their security, he added.
He demanded that the joint forces conduct combing operation in the south-western region soon to catch outlaws and recover their illegal arms and ammunition.
