IABC of BRACU presents Frosh Fest 2013Ayesha Sabrina
It was a bright day outside, the clock was ticking a few minutes past 10, and the indoor game zone of BRAC university on October 1 was all lit and furnished for its Frosh Fest 2013. It is a ritual, a club fair, through which seniors receive the freshmen each year. Eager to be received, people were swarming outside the doors already. Inside, the club members were rehearsing one last time before the crowd rushed in. Finally, the gates opened and the rooms flooded with attendees. There were 40 different clubs with colourful stalls set up to attract new members. The choices ranged from Robotics Club , Drama and Theatre Forum, Monon , Business Club, Media and Journalism Forum, Communication and Language Club, sports and environment clubs.
The efforts that the clubs put in to engage were quite spectacular. The cyclist club displayed a cycle hanging from the ceiling while the chess club was running a game of chess. Film club members hit the dance floor and put up a show with brilliant moves. Music ranged from Oppagangnam to Dhakar Pola, sweet treats options like ice creams to Éclairs’, DVDs to tee-shirts, there was everything, and the crowd loved it! ‘The huge variety of clubs I learned about today, it was quite an experience!’, states Hassan Shahed, an excited BBA freshman.
BRAC U currently has the country’s highest achievement in international debate, holding the World Universities Debating ESL championship title. This year, the Debate Club plans to build on that legacy. The president of the club, Sanjid Rahman, explained, ‘We have a responsibility to hold on to the glory. Therefore our plans include organising unique tournaments like Women’s Open in Debate Festival 2013 and we are on a look out for new talents.’ Similar enthusiasm was shown by the Film Club director, Zaima Zahra, ‘Pretty soon we’ll organise an Introview, an ice-breaking session. There will be an intra-university shortfilm festival too.’ Jumana, a biotechnology fresher joined the film club right after she learnt about their plans. The event was indeed memorable for everyone who made it to the fest.
It was all made possible by mastermind of IABC| BRAC University, organiser association of this year’s Frosh Fest. Generally a club runs the whole show. This time that herculean job was shouldered by International Association of Business Communicators, BRACU chapter. This one-of-its-kind association is the only chapter in Bangladesh working under the guidance of the US based association. With their motto : helping students to ‘be heard’ and become highlighted among millions, they have arranged workshops facilitated by professionals, patronising Model UN conferences and this led them to calling the cards for the fest this year. ‘We are organising the country’s first Global Model United Nation which will accommodate more than 300 delegates coming from all corners of the world this January. We thought with our capacity, we should try and make our newcomers aware of these opportunities and let them feel like a significant part of the BRACU community’, said Ratul Dev, the founding president of IABC.
At the end of the day, the freshmen were thrilled, the clubs were ecstatic with the tremendous response they got and the organisers could not be more content with the fest they successfully pulled off.
