Transport owners yet to apply for operating AC minibusesShahin Akhter
Transport owners are yet to apply to Bangladesh Road Transport Authority for permission to operate air conditioned minibuses in Dhaka, officials said.
BRTA deputy director (engineering) SK Biswas told New Age that the private sector transport owners were yet to apply for permission to ply the AC minibuses in Dhaka.
‘The transport owners have to submit their application to the Regional Transport Committee which will give the operators route permission,’ the director added.
Gulistan-New Airport Minibus Owners’ Association chairman Mohammad Nasir Uddin said that he did not get any information about applying procedure.
Bangladesh Road Transport Owners’ Association secretary general K Enayet Ullah claimed that they had applied to the authorities, but were yet to get any reply.
The transport owners alleged that they were incurring continuous losses in running transport in the capital due to traffic congestion and low fare rates.
‘Maybe for these reasons the transport owners are not interested to ply these minibuses in Dhaka,’ Enayet Ullah added.
The communications minister, Obaidul Quader, on May 29 said AC minibuses would be inaugurated in Dhaka city within the next four months to meet the demand for comfortable vehicles.
The minister again, on September 18, said that 100 air-conditioned minibuses will be pressed into service in the capital to ease passenger movement.
At the same time the government gave permission to ply these minibuses in the city, said the transport authority officials.
According to the BRTA, till 2012 there were a total of 8,583 minibuses in Dhaka.
A Dhaka Metropolitan Police report, submitted on January 20 to the parliamentary standing committee on home ministry, said that the total number of on-street public minibuses in the capital was 3,100.
