Hasina criticises KhaledaHasan Major
The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Thursday criticised the leader of the opposition in the parliament, Khaleda Zia, saying that the people who could misappropriate orphanage money could not do anything for the welfare of people.
‘They [the BNP] can only spread falsehood to misled people, loot money and establish a reign of terror as they have no responsibility towards the country,’ she said delivering her introductory speech at a meeting with the party’s grassroots leaders in her residence, Ganabhaban, in the afternoon.
Hasina said that Khaleda was not appearing in court in connection with the orphanage money misappropriation case as she feared that the allegation would be proved.
As part of a series of meetings to decide party candidates for the next parliamentary elections, the Awami League president Hasina on Saturday held meeting with presidents and general secretaries of the party’s units of Rajshahi city and district, Shariatpur, Netrakona, Natore, Narsingdi, Satkhira, Jhenaidah districts and upazila and Grade I municipality units.
Hasina said that the BNP’s returns to power means playing tricks with the fate of people. She alleged that the BNP had sided with the defeated force of 1971 and was still trying hard to save war criminals.
‘They [BNP] tried to save killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in various ways such as by enforcing a general strike on the day of verdict but could not save them. Now they are killing innocent people to save the war criminals. This time they cannot also save the war criminals,’ Hasina said adding that the AL-led government had begun the trial and would also complete it to rid the nation of the stigma.
Referring to the forthcoming elections, Hasina said that Khaleda would not like to see her (Hasina) in power and it was proved by her (Khaleda’s) activities.
‘She tried to have me killed by her son and cabinet members on August 21, 2004. As she does not want to see me, she celebrates her birthday on August 15 when I mourn the death of members of my family,’ she said.
Hasina said that she (Khaleda) might have been involved with the BDR rebellion. ‘If she [Khaleda] had not been involved, she would not have gone underground just one to two hours before the rebellion broke out,’ she added.
As for 15th amendment to the constitution, the prime minister said that they had brought about amendment to the constitution to establish parliamentary democracy and maintain the constitutional process.
Hasina asked grassroots leaders of her party to project government successes to voters and the BNP’s failures, repression on people, corruption and patronisation of criminals during its rule of 2001–2006.
‘Now your [grassroots] work is to go the people and project the government successes to them alongside of the BNP’s failures and atrocity during its rule,’ she said.
AL leaders Kazi Zafarullah, Satish Chandra Roy, Abul Hasnat Abdullah and Mrinal Kanti Roy attended the meeting.
