Gas crisis deepens in NarayanganjOur Correspondent . Narayanganj
Hundreds of consumers in Narayanganj city and its outskirts have been facing gas crisis for a long time, but the authorities concerned are yet to take necessary measures to ease the problem.
Local residents and different organisations are staging demonstrations in protest at the gas crisis which has deepened in recent times.
Seeing no end to the gas crisis, most of the rich families have already bought stoves to cook food. Low income people have also bought earthen ovens to cook food by using firewood.
Due to the gas crisis, the gas-based industries usually remain closed during the daytime, hampering the production seriously and throwing the employees out of their jobs.
To cook food, housewives have to wait till midnight when they get very minimum gas as the authorities also start running their factories at that time.
Some consumers said gas pressure comes down to zero since the sunrise and it increases gradually at midnight.
Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd has two offices in the district — one is situated at BB Road in the city and another at Jatramura in Rupganj.
Narayanganj zone office manager Engineer Shafiqur Rahman said that gas pressure was very low. ‘We cannot increase gas supply as per consumers’ demand.’
According to official data, there are 50 thousand domestic gas connections, three hundred commercial connections and five hundred industrial gas connections.
‘Standard gas pressure is 50 PSI (pound per square inch). If available, then there will be no problem in supplying gas,’ the manager added.
He also said that at present gas pressure was low than standard level and it was fluctuating.
The manager of Rupganj office Engineer Sultan Zafar declined to give any information, asking this correspondent to contact the head office at Karwan Bazar in the capital.
Gas consumers have to pay bill regularly in fear of disconnections, some sufferers said and alleged that corrupt officials have been giving new gas connections for the last two months in exchange for money.
