The same old story
WE CANNOT buy mangoes, apples, grapes and all kinds of fruits due to widespread use of formalin and some other chemicals. Can we buy fresh fish? Obviously not.
Consuming food laced with chemicals can make us fall sick and the consultation fee of a specialised doctor is too exorbitant. A few days ago, I visited a doctor who charged Tk 1,000 as consultation fee.
I know two sisters who are very attached to each other but can hardly meet up as they happen to live in those parts of the Dhaka City Corporation where there are severe traffic jam problems. Travelling costs have drastically increased and CNGs or taxicabs have not been using meters for a long time.
Educational expenditure for children is also rising, as they have to go to private tutors, coaching centres and have to buy as many guide books as they can to solve creative questions. They have no leisure time to spend with family and relatives due to immense academic pressure.
The water of the Buriganga has the highest level of contamination due to discharge of industrial wastes from leather factories in Hazaribagh. It is extremely hazardous for residents living in that area. The conditions have not improved and are rather deteriorating day by day.
House rent has skyrocketed beyond people’s capacity to afford and living costs have increased dramatically over the past few years.
Law and order situation has been aggravating for a long time. Leaders and activists of the Chhatra League, student front of the ruling Awami League, are out of control and in some areas, people live in great fear.
But the incumbents claim that they brought significant progress in the country and the development will continue if they are voted to power again. The results of elections in five city corporations are a testament to how unhappy and hopeless people feel with the incumbents.
